Misdiagnosed for 20 Years

Montel was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis in 1999. But his symptoms started almost two decades earlier, during his military career. Pain in his lower extremities, and temporary blindness in one eye. 

Doctor after doctor gave him labels that described symptoms instead of identifying the disease (sciatica, neural anomaly). Nothing that explained what was actually happening.

By the time he got his diagnosis, he’d already hosted a nationally syndicated TV show for years, served 22 years in the military, and raised four children. All while living with a disease nobody could name.

Today he still hosts “Military Makeover with Montel” on Lifetime and runs “Let’s Be Blunt with Montel”, a podcast dedicated to cannabis education. MS didn’t slow him down, it gave him direction.

After his diagnosis, the neuropathic pain became relentless. Doctors prescribed opioids which helped with the pain but they also damaged his liver and kidneys.

Until one of his doctors recommended something unorthodox: cannabis. Safe to say he never looked back.

25 Years of Fighting for Patient Access

A lot of public figures use cannabis quietly. Montel did the opposite, he made it his mission. Testifying before lawmakers, speaking to packed rooms of Congressional staffers, and writing op-eds. 

He used his platform and his celebrity status to do something most people in his position wouldn’t: told the truth about what cannabis did for him, publicly, repeatedly, at a time when it could have cost him everything.

That advocacy helped pass medical marijuana legislation in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Ohio and Pennsylvania. 

It led to the launch of the Montel Williams MS Foundation and LenitivLabs, a cannabis company launched in 2016 to develop medical-grade products and fund research. 

In doing so Montel became the most visible patient-advocate in the country.
