Elite Athletes Are Turning to Cannabinoids for Recovery.
For years, cannabis and athletic performance existed in separate conversations. One was about getting high. The other was about peak output. That separation is breaking down fast.
More elite athletes are using cannabinoids, not recreationally but intentionally. The research is catching up.
Here's What The Data Actually Says
A 2025 study published in Frontiers in Nutrition surveyed Canadian athletes across 27 Olympic and Paralympic sports. Of those, 38% had used CBD. Here's what they reported:

And the US is not far behind. A Kent State University study surveyed trained athletes who use cannabis for recovery. 93% said CBD helped. 87% said the same about THC.
The NCAA’s own 2023 survey of 23,000+ student-athletes found cannabis use climbing every year, with 38% of users saying it helped them sleep better and 37% saying it helped with anxiety and stress.

These are professional athletes whose livelihoods depend on how well they recover. They are not using cannabinoids to escape but to come back stronger.
WADA Removed CBD from the Prohibited List

In 2018, the World Anti-Doping Agency removed CBD from its list of prohibited substances. It was a scientific decision, not a political one. The therapeutic evidence had become too strong to ignore.
Since then, the dominoes have fallen.
-
MLB removed cannabis from its banned list in 2019.
- The NBA stopped testing for it entirely in 2023.
- The NFL raised its THC threshold twice and is now funding a $1 million clinical trial at UC San Diego studying cannabinoids for pain management and concussion neuro-protection in football players.
- The NCAA dropped cannabinoids from its banned list in 2024.
THC remains prohibited in competition under WADA. But CBD, CBG and CBN are all legal, undetectable and increasingly used by athletes at every level.
What Each Cannabinoid Actually Does
Your body has an endocannabinoid system. It regulates inflammation, pain, sleep and stress. Cannabinoids work with that system. Here is how the key ones support recovery:
-
CBD: Reduces inflammation and cortisol after intense training and it helps the body return to balance faster.
-
CBG: In 2024, Washington State University published the first human clinical trial on CBG and anxiety. 20mg of hemp-derived CBG significantly reduced anxiety at 20, 45 and 60 minutes after ingestion. For athletes dealing with performance anxiety or high-stakes training stress, this matters.
-
CBN: Supports deeper, more restorative sleep without creating dependency.
-
THC: In precise, low doses, reduces pain perception without sedating. It takes the edge off the load so the body can focus on repair.

Intentional Use vs Recreational Use
The key word is intentional. Cannabinoids are a tool, not a shortcut. The result depends entirely on how you use them.
As @achidipower put it after taking FK+ pre-rolls before an 8-mile run:
"No shortcuts. No magic. Just direction before I started and discipline while I was in it. That's the difference most people miss."
One comment on his post said it perfectly:
"I finally found someone who smokes and runs and doesn't hide it."
There's a shift happening in real time.
FK+ for Athletic Recovery
Every FK+ product is precisely dosed and botanically formulated for a specific recovery outcome. Not to get you high but to support the system that keeps you performing.
-
ENERGY+: For the output. Cannabinoids combined with Cordyceps, Yerba Mate and Maca Root for clean, sustained energy that holds through the whole session.
-
SLEEP+: For the recovery that happens at night. Supports deeper sleep cycles so the body can actually repair between sessions.
-
RELAX+: For the nervous system reset. Reduces cortisol and eases tension between training sessions so you go into the next one actually recovered.
-
FOCUS+: For the mental edge. Cannabinoids with Lion's Mane and Ginkgo Biloba for cognitive clarity that compounds over time.
